A Great Low-Cal Tequila Sunrise Option
The Low-Calorie Tequila Sunrise is a tasty, visual treat that gives you a guilt-free way to enjoy the tropical flavors of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine without the excess calories and sugar content. The trick to reducing calories while keeping the beverage true to its roots is to take advantage of the natural sweetness of the limes and cranberry juice. Of course, if you prefer to drink like your favorite 70’s rock band, you may prefer the original recipe.
Low Calorie Tequila Sunrise Cocktail Recipe
This method is essentially the same recipe as a normal Tequila Sunrise, but by reducing the portions, we are reducing the calorie count. If you want to be good, be sure to purchase some low-sugar grenadine and low-sugar orange juice. You can also try subbing out the grenadine with cranberry juice, but that didn’t really work for us.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ oz blanco tequila
- 2 ½ oz orange juice (optional: purchase low-sugar OJ)
- ½ oz grenadine (optional: purchase low-sugar grenadine)
- Orange slice and cherry for garnish
- Optional: 2 oz of club soda
Steps
- Fill a highball glass with ice. Add the tequila, followed by the orange juice, and stir well.
- Slowly pour the grenadine over the back of a spoon near the surface of the drink. Allow the grenadine to sink to the bottom, creating the appearance of a sunrise. Using cranberry juice doesn’t result in the same effect.
- Garnish your Tequila Sunrise with an orange slice and a cherry.
- Top with club soda.
- Serve immediately.
Tasty Modifications
Add a dash of cranberry juice to complement the flavor profile. For those who enjoy a beverage with a little more bite, you can add lemon juice and garnish with a lemon slice. For us, we’ll stick to the original.
