Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz Vanilla flavored Vodka, or regular vodka if you prefer
  • ½ oz Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, (you can substitute with dark crème de cacao)
  • ½ oz White crème de cacao
  • Optional: Chocolate shavings & Chocolate syrup

Instructions

  • Drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup inside your martini glass.
  • Add the liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake your heart out.
  • Strain into the prepared glass.
  • Sprinkle chocolate shavings on top.
  • If you're so inclined, before you pour anything into your martini glass, you can sprinkle cocoa powder on a plate and garnish the rim of your martini glass like you would rim a margarita glass with salt.

Notes

We’re being honest here, there’s a lot of ways you can prep these martinis, and we had a hard time choosing the best one. It really depends on your sweetness level and how much cream you want in your cocktail. We went with the one above because it was straight booze (FYI-Godiva Chocolate Liqueur doesn’t have any dairy). Also, the chocolate syrup wasn’t necessary, but we threw it in there because it looked nice and made the drink have a dessert feel.
Hershey’s
  • 1 ½ oz Godiva Chocolate Liqueur
  • 1 ½ oz Dark (or white) crème de cacao
  • ½ oz Chocolate flavored Vodka
  • 2 oz half & half
  • Chocolate syrup drizzled on the inside of the martini glass
Boozy
  • 2 oz Chocolate Liqueur
  • 2 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 1 ½ oz Vanilla Vodka
  • Chocolate syrup drizzled on the inside of the martini glass

The Origins of Chocolate in Cocktails

Check this out, the journey of chocolate from ancient rituals to modern mixology is a story that began over 3,000 years ago in ancient Mesoamerica! Civilizations like the Mayans and Aztecs revered cacao as sacred and used it in religious ceremonies. They often consumed the cacao as a bitter, frothy drink called xocoatl, spiking it with chili peppers .

When Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, they brought cacao back to Europe. Over time, Europeans transformed chocolate into a sweetened delight by adding sugar and milk, making it more palatable to their tastes. By the 19th century, advancements in processing led to the creation of solid chocolate, and soon after, chocolate found its way into liqueurs, spirits and the bedroom.

The Birth of the Chocolate Martini

The exact origins of the Chocolate Martini are as murky as a glass of chocolate milk, but legend has it that Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor concocted the first Chocolate Martini on the set of the 1956 film Giant. Now, of course, no one knows if it was really these two young Hollywood stars getting hot and heavy with their mixology, but we sure like the story almost as much as we like 80’s music. And as luck would have it! The more likely story of the Chocolate Martini traces back to the 1980s, a period when perms, leather jackets, electronic guitars and dessert cocktails surged in popularity.

Valentine’s Day Staple

It’s no surprise that the Chocolate Martini has become a favorite for Valentine’s Day celebrations. Chocolate and romance have been intertwined for centuries, with the Victorians popularizing the gift of chocolates as a token of love. Today, the Chocolate Martini offers a sophisticated way to indulge in this ancient aphrodisiac, blending the rich, comforting flavors of chocolate with the celebratory spirit of alcohol.

Q: What’s the difference between crème de cacao and chocolate liqueur?

A: Crème de cacao is a sweet chocolate-flavored liqueur available in dark and white versions, while chocolate liqueur like Godiva tends to be richer and creamier. Both add chocolate flavor but may differ in sweetness and intensity.

Q: How can I make a vegan-friendly Chocolate Martini?

A: Use plant-based cream alternatives like almond or coconut milk. Ensure the chocolate liqueurs are dairy-free or opt for vegan chocolate syrups.
