The Oaks Lily

The Oaks Lily cocktail is a fruity drink most often savored at the Kentucky Derby’s sister race, The Kentucky Oaks. However, no one will judge you for indulging in a glass or two at the Derby. It’s a delightful mix known for its refreshing and colorful presentation. Give it a try if you’re looking for a lighter alternative to the Mint Julep.

The Oaks Lily Cocktail Recipe

The Oaks Lily

The Oaks Lily is a cocktail sometimes associated with the Kentucky Derby but it's traditionally served as the official drink of the Kentucky Oaks, a race held the day before the Derby. It’s a refreshing, fruity cocktail when compared to the Derby’s Mint Julep and it appeals to those who prefer something lighter and sweeter.

  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice or sour mix
  • Lemon peel and blackberry speared on a cocktail pick for garnish
  • Optional: simple syrup

Instructions

  • In a shaker, mix cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, Triple Sec, and vodka over ice.
  • Strain into a chilled glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with lime wedges.
  • Optional: Add simple syrup to taste.

Notes

We’re not going to lie, the comment below is correct. When we tried this variation with really tart cranberry juice and no simple syrup, it killed the drink for us. To remedy, we made a pitcher to watch a horse race and dumped a whole bunch of simple syrup in. Once we did that, the drink was a hit and disappeared

Tasty Variation

Sub out the lime for lemon or lemonade; use a ½ oz of simple syrup; garnish with blackberries. Some also replace the Triple Sec with Cointreau.

History

The Oaks Lily is the signature drink of the Kentucky Oaks, a race that takes place the day before the Kentucky Derby. Three-year-old thoroughbred fillies sprint around Churchill Downs and the winner is draped in a garland of pink stargazer lilies. The drink’s pink hue is a nod to the winner’s garland and the race’s association with breast cancer awareness.

The Kentucky Oaks, along with the Preakness’ Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and the Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park, are unofficially referred to as the ‘Filly Triple Crown.’ Just like the Oaks Lily is associated with the Kentucky Oaks, the Preakness also boasts its own signature beverage, named after the race—the Black-Eyed Susan cocktail.

Tasty, but way too sour/bitter. Once I added more simple syrup it was good. Maybe it was the cranberry juice I used. Next time I’ll use a more watered down cranberry juice like Ocean Spray or something
